A savvy observer could have foretold the 2006 breakup of Toronto-based duo DFA 1979 (no relation to James Murphy's DFA label). As a band, they had gone stagnant—no recordings, no live shows, nothing—long before they finally called it quits in a post on their blog. Still, it was a bit surprising considering that their only studio album, the urgent electro dance-punk You're a Woman, I'm a Machine, was winning over critics and stirring festival crowds into a frenzy. Success was there, should they choose to pursue it. Then...nothing. So when the band announced their reunion this year (also on their blog), the old excited feelings from five years ago started to stir, and are sure to explode into a frenzy once again when they play the Williamsburg Waterfront this Friday.
