Breaking Bad Intro Re-Envisioned With Motion Graphics [VIDEO]

Posted: 10 Sep 2012 02:36 AM PDT

Want to see something really cool? Well, you could do a lot worse than to look at Martin Woutisseth's motion graphics version of the Breaking Bad intro.

The French graphic designer created the intro to the hit series just for kicks -- and to improve his motion design skills. "I'm also a big fan of the TV serie Breaking Bad (...) So I decide to just make a tribute to Walter White by making an illustration," he explains in the video's description.

The impressive result features 13 characters from the series, along with fully illustrated backgrounds and a new tune to accompany the imagery.

How do you like the video? How does it compare to the original Breaking Bad intro? Sh…

HP Debuts Four New All-in-One Windows 8 Desktops [PICS]

Posted: 09 Sep 2012 09:58 PM PDT

Hewlett-Packard unveiled four all-in-one PCs on Monday, most notably the super-slim SpectreOne.

Interestingly though, while HP is known for its TouchSmart line of devices, the SpectreOne is not a touchscreen. At just 11.5-mm thin, however, it is the company's slimmest all-in-one PC. A spokesperson told Mashable that the desktop is not touch because HP wanted to focus on the thinness of the panel.

With a 23.6-inch flush-glass full HD display and a curved back, the SpectreOne is equally sleek. It features a wireless trackpad with multi-touch technology (a la Apple), so users can easily scroll, swipe and tap through Windows 8's tile-based user interface.

The SpectreOne includes an…

This week, Mashable readers debated everything from political preferences to technological know-how. And rumors ran rampant about Mitt Romney's tax returns and the iPhone 5 launch next week.

When Twitter caused a stir by announcing it would limit third-party clients, our readers shared their worries about the upcoming changes in the social network's evolving API.

Some things never change, however, like the tensions between parents and children. Mashable readers with children sounded off on parental do's and don'ts when using social media.

The community also shared its thoughts on the new product launches this week, as the industry kicks off holiday season gadget sales. Nokia an…

Crowd-Sourced Documentary to Tell Story of NFL Fans’ Season

Posted: 09 Sep 2012 08:13 PM PDT

Sports fans are a tried-and-true subject for compelling sports stories. But a documentary project currently underway puts a new twist on the genre by encouraging fans themselves to provide the footage from their mobile devices.

Called "The Season of Your Life," it will follow Detroit Lions fans during the current NFL season. The project claims to be the first "social" sports documentary, and asks fans to upload footage they shoot to the film's website. Traditions, tailgates, hopes, memories and reactions to the season's big moments are all encouraged. The Lions' official site and stadium Jumbotron will feature popular clips throughout the season, and the full 85-minute documentary will b…

This Qbotix Robot Is Solar Power’s Best Friend [VIDEO]

Posted: 09 Sep 2012 07:26 PM PDT

Solar power is great, but it isn't a perfect system. Panels are only in optimal ray-catching position for a small part of the day. Moving them and their own individual motors takes energy and hurts efficiency, especially with large solar fields.

Enter the Qbotix Solbot.

The small, battery-powered robot rides a monorail track underneath the panels of a solar farm. It travels from panel to panel, rotating each one so that it faces the sun for maximum efficiency. The panels get as much sun as possible, and don't have to waste any of the power they generate, by rotating themselves.

"We are the first company to use mobile, intelligent robots to…

5 Ways Your Business Should Use Twitter Hashtags

Posted: 09 Sep 2012 06:45 PM PDT

Assuming you already have a Twitter account dedicated to your small business, you should also be investing in hashtags as part of your social media strategy.

But let's back up a bit, in case you're unsure what a hashtag even is in the first place. Designated by a number sign (#), the hashtag is paired with a word or phrase to perform a variety of functions. Twitter users attach hashtags to tweets as search mechanisms, categorizing tools and marketing tactics.

In your business' case, you may choose to attach a hashtag, such as #smallbiz, or even your brand's name itself, as #nike might do. This improves the chance that other Twitter users will find your tweet in targeted Twitter s…

Google Glass Graces the Runway at New York Fashion Week

Posted: 09 Sep 2012 04:37 PM PDT

Google Glass and Google co-founder Sergey Brin made a surprise appearance at New York Fashion Week Sunday afternoon.

Models walked down the runway at Diane von Furstenberg's Spring/Summer 2013 collection show wearing Glass, the upcoming headset/eyewear device that Google is developing. The augmented reality-enhanced glasses have many smartphone-like functions; users can take pictures, record video, receive messages and check calendars, among other things.

The bands of each pair were modified to complement the collection's palette of corals, blues, whites and grays. It was the first time Glass had ever appeared on a runway.

Models recorded video using Google Glass, which wi

5 Games You Should Play in Your Downtime

Posted: 09 Sep 2012 03:30 PM PDT

1. Super Hexagon

Super Hexagon is described by its creator Terry Cavanaugh as an action game. I might describe it as shapes causing you pain. Yet, this simple iOS game is extremely addictive. The concept is to navigate a point on a hexagon around past waves of incoming lines. You only have the ability to rotate left and right, and have fractions of a second to avoid being crushed. The visuals are hypnotizing, and are paired with a great soundtrack. While this game description might not make much sense, all I can say is: If you like high-speed action and very difficult games, this is completely worth the 99-cent price tag. [iTunes link]

If you have time to kill, and just can't figure out what to play, Mashable is here to help with a list of great games to pick up during your downtime.

While this week was light on AAA releases, plenty of great mobile and indie content came out to whet our gaming appetites. Along with some new iOS releases, we also threw in a game or two you might have missed.

Nineteen-year-old Adam Cudworth got these photos using a camera he bought on eBay.

NASA's space missions cost millions and millions of dollars, but a British teenager has managed to get some stunning shots of planet Earth using just a camera he bought on eBay and a do-it-yourself spacecraft.

Nineteen-year-old Adam Cudworth spent just 40 hours and about $600 to grab the images you see above, according to a Telegraph report. He placed the camera, a simple Canon A570, in an insulated box with a GPS device, radio transmitter and microprocessor. Then he used a balloon to send the makeshift spacecraft more than 20 miles into the sky -- high enough, his photos show, to capture dramatic views of the Earth's curvature.

The device took about two and half hours to ascend, the…

Apple Patent Would Disable Smartphones by Location [VIDEO]

Posted: 09 Sep 2012 10:43 AM PDT

Apple has been granted a patent that would make your smartphone useless when entering an area deemed too sensitive for mobile photo and video.

The technology, if implemented, would likely be welcomed by many. It could, for example, be extremely useful to Hollywood executives worried about mobile-savvy bootleggers and teachers concerned about less-than-honest students.

But it also has some darker potential implications. Recent political and populist movements -- most notably the Arab Spring -- have relied heavily on the power of mobile devices and social media. Disabling protesters' ability to record police actions or other events would be a pow…
