Looking to offset the cost of upgrading? If you own an iPhone 4S, then you're in luck. Through its Reuse and Recycling program, Apple will offer $345 on an Apple gift card in exchange for the old device, depending on its condition, The Next Web reports.
The online wizard lets users select the model, color and condition of your iPhone 4S, and will then provide an estimated value of the device. Naturally, its value diminishes if there are scratches, water damage and o…

Welcome to this morning's edition of "First To Know," a series in which we keep you in the know on what's happening in the digital world. Today, we're looking at three particularly interesting stories.
A Swarm of Tablets, Smartphones and Other Gadgets Unveiled at IFA Berlin
For the last couple of days we've been following the multitude of gadgets revealed ahead of the IFA Berlin 2012 consumer electronic show, and we've been impressed by what we've seen so far.

We know that cellphones and driving don't mix. Despite the accidents and known risks, 89% of teens say they reply to a text message or email within five minutes, driving or not. So can the technology responsible for distracting many drivers, also serve to prevent roadway collisions and close-calls?
A new app called DriveScribe turns your phone into a "driving coach." Aimed in particular at helping those new drivers learn the rules-of-the-road, the app monitors speed, and blocks all texts, updates and calls while the car is in motion. It uses GPS, social media, real-time voice feedback and a jamming function to block texts and calls. The app will tell drivers to slow down if they're…

The amazing altruism of Redditors is clear through the laundry list of good deeds that have stemmed from the network. From raising $600,000 for a bullied bus monitor to powering the TV dreams of disabled comedian Zach Anner, a lot of good happens because of Reddit.
"The Front Page of the Internet" is a town hall of sorts, where concerned citizens can discuss problems, rally support and provide solutions. Recognizing the platform's power, payment startups Dwolla and Stripe have teamed up to help amplify moments of good on the Internet. The tech duo launched Reddit Donate this week, after working on it as a "side passion project."
Reddit Donate is a free fundraising platform created…

Yoga, deep breathing, wine. There are many ways to make life less stressful, but this time of year, smartphones get the credit for being the best stress-reliever -- at least, for moms of school-aged children.
A recent survey shows that 85% of moms say "their smartphone definitely eases the back-to-school strain, making this time of year less stressful overall."
Moms of all ages said their phones (whether basic or smart) ease their stress during this time of year: 89% under 35 vs. 85% 35–44 vs. 83% over 45. But the back-to-school season isn't the only time moms are glad to have their handy smartphones -- nearly nine in 10 smartphone-owning mothers of school-age kids (87%) admitted…

Feast your eyes on this piece of symmetry in motion. It's a video montage of scenes from Stanley Kubrick's movies that highlight the legendary filmmaker's penchant for the one-point perspective shot.
This perspective focuses on a single vanishing point directly opposite the viewer's eye. Kubrick used the technique in his films, including 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket and Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. All of these classics are featured in the video, which was uploaded Wednesday by Vimeo user kogonada.

DirecTV has partnered with 20th Century Fox to produce a new digital series of short episodes that satire the world of college football TV licensing deals. Called Suit Up, the comedy will debut for two weeks on Yahoo starting Sept. 12, then move to DirectTV's Audience Network in January.
Suit Up tells the story of a high-profile college football program that loses its deal with a cable company after a major scandal. DirecTV is cast in the series as swooping in to the save the program from media irrelevance.
The series marks DirecTV's first stab at self-promotion via a branded digital entertainment production. But Jon Gieselman, the company's vice president of marketing, says the…

Parallels for Mac Version 8
Parallels lets you run Windows on your Mac. The trick is you can run both OSes simultaneously, with your Windows apps showing up just like Mac apps would. Version 8 supports Mountain Lion features, such as dictation and notifications, for Windows apps.
You may know that you can boot Windows on your Mac machine by virtue of the two operating systems sharing the same processing technology. What you may not know is you can actually run both at the same time through emulator software like Parallels.
The app has been around since 2006 (ever since Apple switched to Intel chips), and has been steadily improving ever since. If your business has the all-too-common headache of supporting both Windows machines and Macs, desktop simulators like Parallels and VMware Fusion can help get all your computers running the same apps.
Parallels just revealed Version 8 of its Mac desktop software. It aims to fully merge the two latest iterations of Mac an…

There are all sorts of themed marketplaces on the Internet, from Etsy to Gilt. But where do you find products that benefit causes that are close to your heart?
Inspired by Toms Shoes, Freeman loved the idea of a great item that benefits an even better cause. After doing some research, not only did he learn that a marketplace for these products was missing, but it's also a $40 billion industry.

Are you having more trouble sleeping since you got your iPad or Samsung Galaxy S II? That comes as no surprise to researchers at the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, who've found that two or more hours of exposure to backlit devices suppresses melatonin.
This suppression, especially in teenagers, can lead to trouble sleeping at night, according to researchers led by Mariana Figueiro, director of the LRC's Light and Health Program.
"Our study shows that a two-hour exposure to light from self-luminous electronic displays can suppress melatonin by about 22%," Figueiro says in a statement. "Stimulating the human circadian…

Ann Romney, RNC 2012
In 1992, Barbara Bush addressed the nation on live television during the Republican National Convention and kicked-off a still upheld tradition of hopeful first ladies. Since the first Bush, every wife of a presidential candidate has addressed their husbands' parties during their respective conventions.
"She's the first first lady to have prepared remarks," Carl Sferrazza Anthony, historian of the National First Ladies' Library, told the AP. "And without saying anything overtly political, she's talking about the political issues of that period."
Tuesday evening, Ann Romney followed in the footsteps of the potential first ladies before her. Check out Ann's speech, as well as the oth…

HP Envy x2 Windows 8 Hybrid PC
The Envy x2 aims to fulfill both your laptop and tablet needs. It's a full Windows 8 PC, powered by Intel's mobile "Clover Trail" processor, but when you just want to sit back with a tablet, the 11.6 monitor slips out of the dock. No price yet, but HP says it should be available by the holidays.
It's been a year since Hewlett-Packard's disastrous first dive into the tablet market with the short-lived TouchPad, so it's understandable that the company is hesitant to dip back in the pool. This time, HP debuted the Envy x2 (does that stand for second try?), a hybrid computer that morphs from laptop to tablet and back again.
Like the Samsung Windows 8 hybrids we saw yesterday, the x2 transforms via a keyboard dock. Detach the 11.6-inch monitor, and suddenly you're holding a Windows tablet that's begging to be touched. What's more, it remains a full Windows PC, powered by an Intel Atom "Clover Trail" processor for maximum portability.
During our brief encounter with the device, we w…

Mario Alberto Chavez Cardenas caught two different berries growing out of the same branch.
In recent weeks, we've seen college students packing up their possessions in order to start a new life away from home. And who wouldn't be excited by the prospect of a fresh start in a different environment? New beginnings manifest in a number of ways: a butterfly emerging from a cocoon or a plane ticket to a new city. A crate waiting to be unpacked in a new home. A handful of seeds waiting to be planted.

President Obama's Reddit AMA Wednesday was an important moment for the intersection of politics and Internet culture. But for Reddit, the event serves as the site's coming-out party to mainstream Internet users.
From News Aggregator to News Maker
For the last 18 months, I've watched Reddit's role as a media influencer and informer rise steadily and stealthily. Reddit has increasingly become a place that I discover news, stories and issues before they bubble up to the mainstream.
I used to classify Reddit in the same bucket as other community sites such as Slashdot, Hacker News, MetaFilter, Fark and Digg. But Reddit has surpassed all of those sites when it comes to pure i…

On August 28, a camera on board the International Space Station captured footage of Hurricane Isaac from 253 miles above Earth. The video was taken as the powerful storm swirled towards the southeast coast of Louisiana.
Isaac made landfall on Tuesday evening, and has since been downgraded to a tropical storm.
Instagram user Chris Butler also had the chance to see Isaac from above, but a little bit closer to the ground. Butler was flying over the storm on a Delta flight and shared the incredible shot below from somewhere over Louisiana.

10. The Rise And Fall Of Welfare Reform
This ad focused on President Obama's dismantling of the welfare reform bill in 2012. The bill was signed into legislation in 1996 with widespread bipartisan support. The ad used statements from other Democrats -- like Obama's VP Joe Biden -- stating their support for the original bill to imply Obama is out of step with his fellow politicians and the country's needs. The ad was shared 47, 624 times.
Mitt Romney is set to formally accept the GOP nomination at the Republican National Convention Thursday night, but his presidential campaign has long been in the works. A key ingredient to that campaign -- like most presidential hopefuls -- has been the use of television ads.
A Pew Research Center study found that by July, 64% of voters polled had already seen or heard a political commercial from one of the 2012 candidates. Only 7% of those ads were positive -- that is, touting the candidate's virtues rather than tearing down his opponent.

In the cold calculus of presidential politics, here's how things are supposed to work. You spend hours of travel time going from campaign rally to campaign rally, where if you're lucky and your staff has found a big enough venue, a few thousand people will watch you give the same old stump speech. You hope it'll get picked up in the news, even though the last thing you'll be doing is breaking news (unless it's for an unplanned gaffe).
If you answer questions, it's in a controlled Town Hall format, not a cacophonous free-for-all. You trumpet your appearances in advance for maximum exposure. And you certainly don't try for anything major during your opponents' convention.

Many tech startups make the grave mistake of not actively seeking patent protections for unique technology or processes. Until a tech startup files a patent for its technology, competitors can copy and essentially steal it.
To avoid this, a company needs to file a utility patent on its technology with the United States Patent and Trademark Office as soon as possible. To understand the many parts that make up a patent probably means you'll need guidance and counsel from an experienced patent attorney. It also means you should know about the three critical components of this process. Here they are.

1. Star Trek vs Star Wars
The mad dash to ask Barack Obama a question nearly brought down Reddit Wednesday afternoon during the president's surprise AMA. Questions piled up on the site and varied from the serious to the silly.
Obama stuck primarily to serious questions about topics like Internet freedom and small businesses, but he also took a few seconds to answer a couple less weighty inquiries regarding beer and his favorite Bulls player.
Not every silly question got the presidential seal of approval though, so if you wanted to know Barack's toothbrush color, you'll just have to wait until he invites you to the White House.

Photographers for national news outlets won't be the only ones jockeying to capture unique images from the U.S. Open tennis tournament on Thursday. An elite crew made up of three of Instagram's most popular users will be there too, with better vantage points than any fan and intimate access to rival that of any traditional media shutterfly.
The three Instagrammers -- @bridif, @takinyerphoto and @newyorkcity, who have a combined following that tops 600,000 -- will be at the tournament as part of a tennis-themed Evian marketing play with a clever social media twist. Their shots don't have to be branded or reflect some corporate stance, but the idea is that they'll make Evian look good and c…

For years, Gmail has dominated as the standard -- even to the extent that the web savvy crowd tends to think less of people who use a more archaic email service, a phenomenon known as domain discrimination. The rationalization goes, why would you keep using a limited email interface when there's a better product out there?
Along those same lines, your Gmail might be outdated if you haven't tried some of these handy plugins. Mashable rounded up the best here, which are each available to install as a Chrome Extension, and a few are available on Firefox as well. If you've already tried these, tell us your verdict in the comments, and feel free to suggest plugins we might have missed!…

Forty-four thousand followers and 22,000+ Tweets after I first joined Twitter in 2008, I am verified. It means a lot more to me than I ever thought it would. This could indicate a problem, an immoderate obsession with one of the world's most popular social media platforms. I'm okay with that. I never said I was perfect.
Getting verified on Twitter was almost completely beyond my control. I say "almost" because Twitter does pay attention to accounts, and real people decide who does and does not get verified.
This is how Twitter describes the "process" on its Help page:
"Twitter proactively verifies accounts on an ongoing basis to make it easier for users to find who they're…

Samsung unveiled its first Windows RT tablet on Wednesday during the 2012 IFA conference in Berlin.
The tablet is part of Samsung's new ATIV product series -- a name that is the reverse order of the word "vita," meaning "Life" in Latin -- and includes the world's first Windows 8 phone. The company said the new products are a part effort to "make life easier for everyone."
Windows RT is the version of Windows 8 made to run on devices powered by ARM-based processors, as opposed to traditional chips made by Intel and AMD.
