LG Optimus L5 Comes to Europe in June

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 04:57 AM PDT

LG's stylish Android 4.0 smartphone, the Optimus L5, is coming to the UK, Germany and France this month, followed by markets in CIS, Middle East and Asia, and, finally, Central America and South America.

The device will not win many users on specs -- with an 800 MHz CPU, 4 GB of internal storage memory (further expandable to 32 GB via Micro SD cards), and a 5-megapixel shooter on the back, it's mediocre at best.

It does, however, win points on style: its 4-inch display and a 9.5mm thick body remind us of LG's PRADA line of products.

In some markets (Asia, CIS, Middle East, Central and South America only) the Optimus L5 will also come with dual SIM capabilities.

Crazy Bird Call Man Interrupts U.S. Open [VIDEO]

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 04:23 AM PDT

Who says golf is boring? If you made the mistake of tuning out of this year's U.S. Open, for instance, you missed this extraordinary interview with champ Webb Simpson.

True, the interview itself, with NBC's Bob Costas, is initially about as exciting as a sand trap, but things change when an odd man wearing a Union Jack hat arrives on the scene to do some impromptu bird calls. Simpson may not have been too amused initially ("Enjoy the jail cell, pal," he says), but the Internet is, sending the video to the top of Reddit. Simpson also came around, tweeting a picture of himself with Bird Call Man with the message, "My new friend."

What do you think? Did bird call man score a birdie? L…

Mozilla Junior Is the Simplest iPad Browser Yet

Posted: 18 Jun 2012 02:45 AM PDT

Mozilla is working on a new WebKit-based iPad web browser called Junior.

Currently in prototype stage, Junior is probably the simplest iPad browser we've seen, reducing the UI to only a couple of buttons -- a back button and a plus symbol that lets you access bookmarks, recent pages and an URL/search bar.

The main idea behind Junior is reducing the clutter -- the browsing experience takes up the iPad's entire screen, and even the tabs are gone. However, those two main buttons can be expanded to reveal other functions, such as reload or print, while other functions can be accessed with finger gestures.

The browser is still in early stages in development, and many functions are mis…

As Mobile Traffic Ramps Up, Hearst Looks to Monetize

Posted: 17 Jun 2012 09:30 PM PDT

Mobile traffic is booming at Hearst: Overall volume across its magazines' websites is up nearly 2000% year-over-year, vastly outpacing global mobile traffic growth, according to internal measurements. But like Facebook and other digital publishers, the company is still looking for ways to monetize that traffic.

In April, approximately 19% of all traffic came from mobile devices including tablets, Hearst tell us. (For context, 10% of total global Internet traffic comes from mobile devices, up from 5% last year, according to the chart from KPCB below.) At Cosmopolitan magazine's website, a full third of pages are viewed on mobile devices. Google is the primary driver of that traffic, accoun…

5 Fascinating Things We Learned From Reddit This Week

Posted: 17 Jun 2012 12:28 PM PDT

1. Bill Gates' Mug Shot Cameo

Notice anything unusual about the generic silhouette in Microsoft Outlook 2010? Reddit users did some online research and found an article that confirmed the outline appeared to match with a mug shot of Microsoft's former CEO and current chairman Bill Gates.

Reddit users have quite a sense of humor. We often find a fact or two underneath a joke, but on Reddit, humorous moments often prove to reveal interesting new knowledge.

This week, Reddit users, using Jackie Chan references, entertained the idea of coconut water functioning as an emergency IV fluid. Meanwhile, the fact that a man named Ronald MacDonald robbed a Wendy's restaurant led to a more straightforward discussion about the name's popularity -- and whether his parents were traditional or just mean.

"The Smart Cover is one of the best accessories for iPad, but it's too limiting as an iPad stand: either its so reclined you can't see the screen or it's so upright that I have to back-up," Saguy says on his Kickstarter page for the product. "What you really want is the iPad facing you directly, but the Smart Cover doesn't do that...until now!"

Do Cellphones Cause Cancer? FCC May Revisit The Issue [REPORT]

The FCC may be taking another look at its standards pertaining to radio frequency energy emitted from cellphones, particularly whether or not mobile phones cause brain tumors or other health concerns.

According to Reuters, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski circulated a proposal Friday to other FCC commissioners asking for a formal inquiry into the standards the agency set in 1996.

While a spokesman stressed that the FCC doesn't specifically think mobile phones are at the root of any health issues, the inquiry would revisit the issue and ensure there wasn't scientific evidence to the contrary.
