Today co-host Ann Curry has confirmed her exit from the morning show after a week of speculation.

The 55-year-old journalist has served as a co-host on the show opposite Matt Lauer for the past year and will be entering into a new multi-year contract with NBC to cover the world’s biggest stories via network specials.

“It’s going to be a bit of a tough day,” Ann told USA Today of the announcement she is expected to make on-air on Thursday (June 28). “I’m going to have to tell our viewers. That’s what makes me more emotional than anything. I don’t want to leave them. I love them. And I will really miss them.”

“You know, Matt and I have had great on-air chemistry for 14 years, been part of the No. 1 winning team for a history-making number of years,” she added. “That said, I just finished my freshman year as co-host. On preferring indie films over big blockbusters: “I don't know if my agents would appreciate me saying this, but the focus and energy demanded when you don't have any money or time is much more exciting than those projects where there's a little too much time and a little too much money and it gets sluggish. You lose that urgency, and that's what I love most."
