Glam Slam: Fashion Recycling Is Alive & Well

The First Lady did it again — recycled a dress, that is.

She’s been known to repeat outfits, but this time she did it on Easter Sunday… a special day for many who go out and get all gussied up buying something new for the occasion.

For me, as a girl growing up in the South, we always got something new to wear for Easter. The dress, the hat, the white patent leather Mary Janes, the white purse and, of course, no Easter outfit would be complete without white gloves. We weren’t rich by any means, but it was a yearly tradition. Easter Sunday was a very big deal for us church-going folks. I still continue that tradition of getting my three-year-old a pretty new dress to wear although, for her, it’s for a trip to see and take a photo with the Easter Bunny.

Easter is different for adults, who don’t outgrow their clothes. Pretty much everybody wears their clothes over and over again, so one could argue why do we still make a big deal about the first lady recycling?

It’s only in the last few years that the term “recycling” has become popular, and celebrities and public figures like the First Lady and Kate Middleton have made recycling trendy.

Not only does Kate wear clothes from her closet again and again…she just recently wore a dress of her mom’s! Love it! Once upon a time, a Duchess borrowing an outfit from her mum may have been considered gauche or tacky, but times have certainly changed.

Since we’re going through some shaky financial times, it’s nice to see the first lady shopping her own closet. The dress she wore to Easter services is a floral Thakoon, which she also wore back in April of 2009 during a trip to Germany. She changed it up, adding a sweater and brooch, proving she can be stylish and thrifty all at the same time.
