Rent is so wonderfully, hormonally full of itself, I just can't stay mad at it—it soars over its own intrinsic absurdities. Revived and resized at the Off Broadway multiplex New World Stages, Jonathan Larson's infectious rock masterpiece—La Bohème on the LES in the early nineties—feels less dated today than when it opened on Broadway in 1996. (Now it's cutting-edge eighties nostalgia.) A new young cast, working hard to make it fresh, is more tender, more diffident, and, in some solos, more vocally reticent than the original crew. The show now belongs to Maureen (Annaleigh Ashford), Joanne (Corbin Reid), and Angel (MJ Rodriguez, who's updated the magical-drag-pixie role for the Age of Gaga).
