An exhibition of works by the famed artist and activist, who made headlines recently when he was jailed by the Chinese government on tax-evasion charges and released after an international campaign of protest. Ai spent a significant part of his career in New York on the fringes of the Basquiat-Koons-Haring scene, where he communed with other expat Chinese artists and explored his neighborhood and the city with a 35-mm. camera. The 227 images on view here are curated to lay bare the dissident artist's fascinations, experiences, and attitudes of the period—and, in the process, drop you back into the grimy East Village of not very long ago.
