Step aside PC, I'm switching to a Mac! But wait, how do I move my stuff?

Dear CNET members,

Happy Friday! It's been a couple of weeks since I've sent out a newsletter and it's good to be back. While I was out, I did a few days of camping with the guys and roughed it out in the middle of no-man's-land. I survived and had a lot of fun. To not be tethered to a cell phone or modern day technology was invigorating. I really don't remember the last time I did that, and I had an absolute blast!

I also helped our team launch an exciting, brand-new site: CNET How To! Yup, a single destination on CNET where you get your technical how-to fix! This site is full of how-to blogs and videos. There's even a how-to forum where you can learn, share, discover, and then learn some more! Our team worked their butts off building this site, and I'm extremely proud and thrilled to see it alive! So check it out (here's a welcome note). I wouldn't be surprised if you spent hours or even days just digging through all the great content provided. And if you ever want to visit it again, the CNET How To link can be found at the top of any CNET site. So enjoy, and visit frequently as there is always something new to learn!

Now let's get rolling with this week's topic from Bernie who's switching to a Mac from a PC, and he's concerned about how do to move his stuff over.

Never fear, Bernie, your fellow CNET community members are here to help! You've received a bunch of extremely helpful suggestions and recommendations to help you move your data over to your new Mac. I went through all the advice, and it doesn't seem too difficult to do. If your data file types are fairly mainstream, you most likely won't have too much trouble using them on your new Mac. While there are several different methods to go about moving your data, most people recommend using an external storage device to port over your data. But remember to back up all your data from your PC before doing anything, just in case things don't work out exactly as planned.

I truly believe that by the time you get through all the advice our members have to offer, you and any other person in your same predicament will be well on your way to knowing what to do. Thank you for your contributions and also for keeping the discussion civil and on topic! Good luck, Bernie! Have a great weekend everyone!

Cheers!
- Lee

Last week's question
Step aside PC, I'm switching to a Mac! But wait, how do I move my stuff?
QuestionStep aside PC, I am switching from a Windows PC to a Mac computer very soon, but before I do any of that, I have some questions. First off, is there an easy way to transfer all my information from the PC to the Mac? I have a lot of files that include office documents, photos, music, and video files, and other miscellaneous data. Will I run into compatibility issues once they are transferred? What things should I be aware of--any particular dos or don'ts in this process? I'm completely green to the Mac world and any advice, recommendations, or tips on how to make this transition to the new system as painless as possible would be greatly appreciated.

Check out next week's question:
New Windows 7 PC, please help me get started on the right track
Next week's questionI'm happy to say that I am a proud owner of a brand-new HP Pavilion Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit desktop. It's fully loaded with all the hardware bells and whistles--Intel i7-970 six-core CPU, 1.5 TB hard drive, 12GB of RAM, Blu-ray player with DVD-R, 1GB ATI Radeon video card, and more. Before I begin to really start using this workhorse, I want to start it off on the right track. I know there are a lot of tips and tricks scattered out there on how to properly maintain a PC, but I really want to nail down a solid list of routine tasks and procedures (software and hardware) to maintain it regularly to keep this baby running in tip-top shape for years to come. This computer took me a long time to save up for and I want to get the most out of my hard-earned money and make it last. Can you please help me out with that? All advice, recommendations, and coaching are welcome. I'm taking notes now. Thanks to all who can help out.
