For new-music aficionados, summer doesn't get going until the Bang on a Can Marathon, the free, all-day binge of strange, raucous, incantatory, and unpredictable sounds. The merrily twisted brass-and-percussion band Asphalt Orchestra will march through from time to time in a thirteen-hour schedule that includes Iannis Xanakis's fantastically intricate, surprisingly endearing saxophone quartet Xas (around noon), Timo Andres's liquid cascades of piano playing in At the River (around 7 p.m.), and, to close out the night, the symphonic punk guitars of Glenn Branca's The Ascension: The Sequel.
